New to Pickleball? Here’s What to Expect at Your First Session

Thinking about trying pickleball in Hamilton? Here’s exactly what to expect from your first beginner session at Padel Park.

If you’ve been curious about pickleball but haven’t booked your first session yet, you’re in good company.

A lot of beginners in Hamilton are looking for a new sport that feels social, accessible, and easy to get into — and pickleball tends to tick all three boxes.

It’s often introduced as one of the easiest racket sports for beginners because the court is smaller, the serve is underhand, the paddle is simple to handle, and rallies come together quickly. Beginner-facing guides repeatedly describe the sport that way.

From the team at Padel Park Hamilton, here’s what to expect at your first session.

Step 1: Create your account and book in

You can sign up through:

From the website:
Make a Booking → Activities → choose Friday

From the app:
Homepage → Activities → Padel or Pickleball Intros → Book

Our current Intro to Pickleball is:

  • Friday: 6:00–6:30pm & 6.30-7.00pm

It is:

  • free
  • 30 minutes
  • paddle included

Step 2: Wear activewear and suitable shoes

Just like padel, there’s not much to worry about here.

Bring:

  • activewear
  • suitable sports shoes
  • a water bottle

We provide:

  • the paddle
  • the balls
  • the coach

Step 3: You’ll be in a small beginner session

Our intro sessions are designed for first-timers.

There are a maximum of 4 people to one coach, so the session stays clear, relaxed, and easy to follow.

That means:

  • plenty of individual help
  • time to ask questions
  • no pressure to keep up with a big group

Step 4: You’ll learn the basics in a simple way

Your first pickleball session is designed to make the sport feel approachable.

You can expect:

  • a simple explanation of the rules
  • demonstrations of the main shots
  • learning how to serve
  • guidance on grip and technique
  • rallying
  • and a game at the end

One of the main things beginners learn early is the rhythm of pickleball:

  • underhand serve
  • double-bounce rule
  • and the kitchen/no-volley zone

Those are also some of the most common beginner search topics around pickleball, which tells you they’re exactly the things people want explained clearly at the start.

Step 5: You’ll probably pick it up quicker than you think

This is one of the best things about pickleball.

A lot of first-timers expect it to take a while before they can rally properly, but because the court is smaller and the paddle is easy to control, many people find they settle in quite quickly.

That ease of entry is one of the main reasons pickleball has become so popular with beginners.

Step 6: Your best next step is usually a social

After your intro, the best thing you can do is come back and play again soon.

At Padel Park, our main recommendation for new pickleball players is to join one of our socials:

  • Tuesday: 5:30–7:00pm
  • Wednesday: 5:30–7:00pm

That’s where you start to:

  • build confidence
  • meet people
  • get more touches on the ball
  • and become comfortable with real game play

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly new sport in Hamilton, pickleball is a great option.

You don’t need:

  • experience
  • your own paddle
  • or any knowledge of the rules before you arrive

You just need to book in and give it a go.
